This is an early animation test by John Lasseter done in 1983 of Where the Wild Things Are (before it was a super hip cool Spike Jonze film). They generated the backgrounds and camera movements in 3D and then composited the 2D animation onto them. Not necessarily ground breaking in 2010, but in 1983? Sure. He was originally supposed to direct The Brave Little Toaster and wanted to use this technique, but he was cast out by the Disney overlords because of the cost. And now he’s head of all Disney Animation studios.
